A massive ‘Sathyagraha’ was held in Colombo today demanding the government to release Gen. Sarath Fonseka. Ms. Anoma Fonseka, General Secretary of DNA Vijithe Herath, DNA Candidate for Colombo District Sunil Handunneththi, several political leaders and a large crowd participated in the ‘Sathyagraha’ organized by ‘‘People’s Solidarity to Emancipate General.’
Before the ‘Sathyagraha’ commenced a police posse of about 300 policemen deployed in the area opposed holding the ‘Sathyagraha.’ There was a heated argument between the police officers and agitators led by Mr. Vijithe Herath. Mr. Herath told police officers that ‘Sathyagraha’ is a silent protest and asked whether democracy in the country has deteriorated so much that people could not make a silent protest.
Later the agitators sat opposite the Fort Railway Station exhibiting photographs of police crack down on Bhikkus who carried out a ‘fast unto death’ demanding the release of the General and how the Bhikkus were abducted.
